The first story is a clumsy attempt at satire and the second is a crash course in the history of the Korean War, and they mesh about as well as oil and water-until the closing chapter brings them together in a way I found unexpectedly elegant and deeply moving. Her story reads quickly, but stays with you for a long time. Nadia Bolz-Weber is funny, wise, and above all, authentic. It’s a brilliant mix of science fiction and spy fiction, pairing the wonders of foreign worlds and space travel with the intrigue and danger of covert operations. We follow a group of soldiers-turned-spies into potentially hostile territories to gain intel on an impending deal with galactic implications. The premise of the novel is pretty straightforward. Moren deserves high praise for mastering two complex genres simultaneously. You’ll find all of the intrigue of a cold war spy novel, set amidst a galaxy on the brink of another massive war.
